10 Things to Say to Your Children During the Coronavirus Outbreak

The Coronavirus outbreak has led to a major change in lifestyle that happened suddenly for our children. I hadn’t said anything to my sons about it yet, and they came home from school one day to learn they wouldn’t get to see their friends and teachers for a while. That was a huge bomb to drop on them. We worked on learning to properly wash hands and practice how to not share germs. It got really difficult as days went by and they started to fully understand there was no more basketball, gymnastics, play dates, trips to the playground, and worst of all, no grandparents. We are constantly reminding them that this is temporary, but it still isn’t easy for their minds and hearts.

Here are 10 things we are saying to each child daily to help the situation seem a little easier:

  1. I love you!
  2. What questions do you have?
  3. What is making you sad? And how can I help make that better?
  4. What is making you happy?
  5. What is something you want to do today?
  6. This is my first time going through this too.
  7. You are not alone.
  8. I’m here to help.
  9. This isn’t forever, and it will get better.
  10. Let’s enjoy this extra time we get to spend together!

Our children are 7,5,3, and 1. These are working great for our 7 and 5 year old sons. Luckily my 3 and 1 year old daughters just think it is the coolest thing ever that their brothers are home all day everyday to play. We are saying these things to our 3 year old too even though we don’t get much response since she barely notices a change. But we want to give her the opportunity to talk through it if she decides to.

What are we saying to our 1 year old you ask? What sound does the lion make? ROAR! How about the doggie? Woof Woof! Just kidding, I know you weren’t curious about that. I’m incredibly grateful that our kids are young enough to miss out on most of the fear that comes with this rough time.

And back on a serious note. We are trying to be as honest as we can about what is going on in the world. Use your judgement and do what you think is right for your family when it comes to sharing and what you want to expose them to. We always try to find the positive side to things, so work to spin it in that direction any chance you can.
